Apples

Apples I picked 600 kg this year. Autumn's apples were four times more than the summer. How many kilograms do I pick in the summer, and how many winter apples?

Correct answer:

a =  120 kg
b =  480 kg

Step-by-step explanation:

a+b=600
b = 4a

a+b=600
b = 4·a

a+b = 600
4a-b = 0

Pivot: Row 1 ↔ Row 2
4a-b = 0
a+b = 600

Row 2 - 1/4 · Row 1 → Row 2
4a-b = 0
1.25b = 600

b = 600/1.25 = 480
a = 0+b/4 = 0+480/4 = 120

a = 120
b = 480
