Bases

The length of the bases trapezium is in ratio 4:5. The length of the midline is 15. How long are the bases of a trapezoid?

Correct answer:

x =  13.33
y =  16.67

Step-by-step explanation:

x/y=4/5 (x+y)/2=15

(x+y)/2 = 15; 5 x = 4 y

(x+y)/2 = 15
5·x = 4·y

x+y = 30
5x-4y = 0

Pivot: Row 1 ↔ Row 2
5x-4y = 0
x+y = 30

Row 2 - 1/5 · Row 1 → Row 2
5x-4y = 0
1.8y = 30

y = 30/1.8 = 16.66666667
x = 0+4y/5 = 0+4 · 16.66666667/5 = 13.33333333

x = 40/3 ≈ 13.333333
y = 50/3 ≈ 16.666667

Our linear equations calculator calculates it.
y=2 154 2 15/(4+5)=16.67
