Two gardens

The total area of the two gardens is 864 m2. The first garden is 60 m2 smaller than three times the second garden. What is the area of each garden?

Correct answer:

a =  633
b =  231

Step-by-step explanation:

a+b = 864
a = 3b-60

a+b = 864
a = 3·b-60

a+b = 864
a-3b = -60

Row 2 - Row 1 → Row 2
a+b = 864
-4b = -924

b = -924/-4 = 231
a = 864-b = 864-231 = 633

a = 633
b = 231
