Father and sons

After 15 years, the father will have as many years as his two sons together now. There is a six-year difference between the brothers, and the older one celebrated fifty years three years ago. How old is their father now?

Correct answer:

x =  85

Step-by-step explanation:

x+15 = a+b
a-b = 6
a = 50+3

a+b-x = 15
a-b = 6
a = 53

Row 2 - Row 1 → Row 2
a+b-x = 15
-2b+x = -9
a = 53

Row 3 - Row 1 → Row 3
a+b-x = 15
-2b+x = -9
-b+x = 38

Row 3 - -1/-2 · Row 2 → Row 3
a+b-x = 15
-2b+x = -9
0.5x = 42.5

x = 42.5/0.5 = 85
b = -9-x/-2 = -9-85/-2 = 47
a = 15-b+x = 15-47+85 = 53

a = 53
b = 47
x = 85
