- Conversion a decimal number to a fraction: 1.25 = 125/100 = 5/4
a) Write down the decimal 1.25 divided by 1: 1.25 = 1.25/1
b) Multiply both top and bottom by 10 for every number after the decimal point. (For example, if there are two numbers after the decimal point, then use 100, if there are three then use 1000, etc.)
1.25/1 = 12.5/10 = 125/100
Note: 125/100 is called a decimal fraction.
c) Simplify and reduce the fraction
125/100 = 5 * 25/4 * 25 = 5* 25/4* 25= 5/4 - Multiply: 45 * 1.25 = 45 · 5/1 · 4 = 225/4
The first operand is an integer. It is equivalent to a fraction 45/1. Multiply both numerators and both denominators. Then simplify the resulting fraction to its lowest terms GCD(225, 4) = 1. In the following intermediate step, the fraction cannot be simplified further by cancelling.
In other words, forty-five multiplied by five quarters equals two hundred twenty-five quarters.
Rules for expressions with fractions:
Fractions - Use a forward slash to separate the numerator and denominator. Decimals Enter decimal numbers using a decimal point (.), and they will be automatically converted to fractions. For example, enter 1.45.
