Ping time

Calculate theoretical ping time between Orlando and Shenzhen which is 14102 km distant. Ping time measures the round-trip time for small messages sent from the origin to a destination that is echoed back to the source. The name comes from active sonar terminology that sends a pulse of sound and listens for the echo to detect objects under water.

Assume that signal travel in optic cable - speed of light in a fiber optic cable (200,000km/s).

Result

t =  141.02 ms

Solution:

$d=2 \cdot \ 14102=28204 \ \text{km} \ \\ v=200000 \ \text{km/s} \ \\ \ \\ t_{1}=d/v=28204/200000 \doteq 0.141 \ \text{s} \ \\ t=1000 \cdot \ t_{1}=1000 \cdot \ 0.141=\dfrac{ 7051 }{ 50 }=141.02 \ \text{ms}$
