Aircraft 4480

Two planes take off simultaneously from airports A and B, fly towards each other, and meet in 20 minutes. The distance between the airports is 220 km, and the average speed of the aircraft flying from airport A is 60 km/h more than the average speed of the other aircraft. What are the average speeds of the two planes?

Correct answer:

a =  360 km/h
b =  300 km/h

Step-by-step explanation:

(a+b)·20/60=220
a = 60 + b

20a+20b = 13200
a-b = 60

Row 2 - 1/20 · Row 1 → Row 2
20a+20b = 13200
-2b = -600

b = -600/-2 = 300
a = 13200-20b/20 = 13200-20 · 300/20 = 360

a = 360
b = 300
