Rectangle vs square

One side of the rectangle is 1 cm shorter than the side of the square. The second side is 3 cm longer than the side of the square. Square and rectangle have the same area. Calculate the length of the sides of a square and a rectangle.

Correct answer:

a =  0.5 cm
b =  4.5 cm
c =  1.5 cm

Step-by-step explanation:

(c-1)·(c+3)=c·c
a=c-1
b=c+3

2c = 3
a-c = -1
b-c = 3

Pivot: Row 1 ↔ Row 2
a-c = -1
2c = 3
b-c = 3

Pivot: Row 2 ↔ Row 3
a-c = -1
b-c = 3
2c = 3

c = 3/2 = 1.5
b = 3+c = 3+1.5 = 4.5
a = -1+c = -1+1.5 = 0.5

a = 1/2 = 0.5
b = 9/2 = 4.5
c = 3/2 = 1.5
